General Information
The only home our daughter, Paulina, ever knew was the Cardiac Unit at The Children’s Hospital in Denver. During our 37 days there in 2002, my wife, Nora, and I were present at all times. We saw many families come through the Cardiac Unit with sick children, many of them infants. Most went home with their children, but a few like us were not as fortunate.
Heart defects/disease combined is the #1 birth defect leading to infant/child deaths. But with proper diagnosis and treatment, many of these children can survive. This year, The Children’s Hospital is building a state-of-the-art heart facility on the Fitzsimmons campus. The new Heart Institute will have the potential to be one of the best pediatric cardiac facilities in the United States, if not the world!
During our stay at the hospital with Paulina, we had the opportunity to observe all the hard work, dedication and daily heroics that happened in the Cardiac Unit. As we watched miracles being performed daily, we promised ourselves and Paulina that no matter what our outcome, we would do everything possible to help this facility and the children born with congenital heart problems. This is our promise to Paulina.
As Nora and I discussed how we could help the Cardiac Unit raise much-needed money, we thought of several fundraising ideas. But as we considered various types of fundraising events, we kept thinking that there must be something different we could do to create a unique win-win situation for everyone. Given my background in dental education and post-graduate continuing education, we agreed that a day of continuing education for dentists and their staff would be an exciting event. From that idea we created the Paulina’s Promise Seminar Series.
Every year in the fall, we will be bringing to Denver many of the most popular dental speakers in the country to provide Colorado dentists with some of the best and exciting dental education available. ALL of the net proceeds generated by this day of education will be donated to the Heart Institute at The Children’s Hospital.

Making It Easy for Patients to Say "Yes"
Case Acceptance for Complex Dentistry
Making It Easy For Patients To Say “Yes” is designed for dentists and team members who want to enjoy improved case acceptance for complex dentistry – cosmetic, implant and restorative dentistry.

- Learn the distinctions between simple and complex care patients
- How to determine whether your patient is ready for complex care
- To understand the role of leadership during the case acceptance process
- Discover ways to reduce the stress of case acceptance

Highlights of the 2005 Paulina’s Promise Seminar
Our first annual seminar was a huge success! We had exciting and informative presentations by Dr. Dennis Wells and Dr. Bill Dorfman, two of the most recognized and respected practitioners in the field of cosmetic dentistry.
Over 180 dentists and staff, along with 11 vendors, participated in the initial event which raised approximately $26,000 for the Heart Institute at the Children’s Hospital in Paulina’s memory. Specifically this contribution helped purchase a piece of equipment which allows the non-invasive assessment of regional blood flow in the body. This device is called the Invos Cerebral Oximetry System manufactured by Somanetics Corporation. It is used to monitor brain perfusion in babies and children during open-heart surgery. We are delighted that Paulina’s Promise will help so many children and their families.
We thank all who participated from the bottom of our hearts for their contributions to this worthwhile event!

Mayor John Hickenlooper welcomed last year's attendees to our 1st annual event.
2006 Paulina’s Promise Seminar
Our 2nd Annual Paulina's promise seminar was held at the Westin Hotel in downtown Denver. Dr. John Cranham, our featured speaker, had a family tragedy and was unable to attend. However on just a few hours notice Drs. Aldo Leopardi, Steve Weinstien, and John Sullivan saved the day by providing our dentist attendees with some great programs.....a special thanks to all 3 of them for saving the day for us. Dr. Cranham's dental assistant Shannon Pace provided a great program for the dental team that received awesome reviews.
Most importantly, we were able to raise over $16,000 dollars for the Cardiac Unit at Children's Hospital. With this money, Nora and I purchased a number of "immediate need" products and equipment that the nurses in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit had desperately been requesting.
2007 Highlights
Our 2007 program was a huge success for our 3rd annual event. This year we developed friendships with Burkhart Dental and the Denver Implant Study Club. The folks at Burkhart have become invaluable partners in assisting with marketing, registration and vendor communication. This is a huge asset and we are happy to be able to announce the Burkhart has committed to Paulina's Promise for future programs. Denver Implant Study Club's founder, local prosthodontist Dr. Aldo Leopardi has partnered with us to help to improve the educational experience of the program. Starting in 2007 DISC will be sponsoring a second speaker to our program so that we can provide broader educational content. Going forward with the assistance of DISC we are able to provide an educational experience for the entire dental office. This year we were honored to have Dr. Ron Jackson as our featured presenter. Dr. Jackson provided a great program on direct resins and our reviews of his program were tremendous. It was an honor and pleasure to have Dr. Jackson on the program. Personally, Nora and I have been touched by Dr. Jackson's friendship as he took a very personal interest in this event as he provided his resources to help us reach more dentist and vendors than we ever had the potential in the past. With the assistance of Dr. Leopardi and DISC Rena Haake provided our staff program. Her energy and information made for a great day of information to the attendees in her program. Rena's enthusiasm was infectious and her message inspiring. We owe a huge thanks to her and Dr. Leopardi for helping to create a greater experience to our program. Most importantly was the bottom line. Thru the efforts of all the above mentioned parties we were able to raise just over $26,000 for the Heart Institute at Children's Hospital. This money was used to purchase a "simulation baby". This piece of equipment has become a valuable training tool at the Heart Institute to assist in the training of doctors and staff to provide better and more efficient care of the patients of the Cardiac Care Unit. Lastly, and most importantly we'd like to thank all of our attendees. Without their participation in our program none of this would happen. Thank you and hope to see everyone again on Sept. 12, 2008.
Sincerely,
Gary and Nora
About The Promise
Paulina Elizabeth Grace Radz was born with a congenital heart disease. She had a double outlet right ventricle, multiple ventricular septal defects, a coarchtation of the aorta……..basically her little heart had multiple structural defects.
On November 22, two hours before we were to be discharged from the hospital, our pediatrician broke the news that Paulina had a serious problem and that she was going to be immediately transferred to the Cardiac Unit at The Children’s Hospital.
For the next 37 days, Paulina received the best medical care available. She endured seven trips to the operating room, four days on an artificial heart machine, and a list of medications that I could never remember or repeat.
During our time with Paulina at the Cardiac Unit, Nora and I observed not only the tremendous effort and dedication of the doctors and staff toward our daughter, but also toward dozens of other children that came through the Unit. As we watched, listened and talked with doctors and staff, it was apparent that, though these people were doing wonderful and tremendous work every day, they could do more. But a huge limiting factor was money. Money for equipment, money for staffing, money for more doctors, money for research … the list goes on.
One night, as Nora and I sat with Paulina and talked about our experiences and observations in the hospital, we made a promise to ourselves and to Paulina that we would do whatever we could to help the hospital and the children they treated in the Cardiac Unit. That fateful night was the beginning of Paulina’s Promise Seminar Series.
As Sept 8th, 2006, approaches, we are keeping our promise to Paulina — and keeping it in a huge way! With Dr. John Cranham and Shannon Pace featured presenters, we are certain the 2nd Annual Paulina's Promise will be an outstanding event.
Nora and I hope you will join us not only for a great day of education and entertainment with John and Shannon, but also to help make a difference in the lives of many local children and their families.
Thank you for helping Paulina make a difference.
Sincerely,
Gary and Nora Radz
